We rebuild faulty Trionic 8 ECUs to address the most common failure mode. Mail your ECU to us — we handle the rest.

How it works

01

Submit your details

Tell us your part number and describe the symptoms. We will review your request and get back to you.

02

Ship your ECU

Once accepted, we send you a payment link and shipping instructions. Post your ECU to us safely.

03

We rebuild it

We diagnose and rebuild your ECU, then ship it back. You are back on the road.

Optional

Stage 1 ECU Tune

While your ECU is with us for testing, we have the opportunity to apply a conservative stage 1 tune to the ECU's BIN file. You can opt into this on the order form at no extra step — just tick the box when submitting your request.

ECU Tuning — Important Information

ECU tuning increases engine output by modifying fuelling, ignition timing, and boost parameters. While this can improve performance and driveability, it places additional stress on drivetrain components beyond the ECU — including the turbocharger, engine internals, gearbox, and clutch.

Because of this, we offer only a conservative stage 1 tune, calibrated to stay within parameters that are considered safe for cars running stock components and in good overall mechanical condition.

It is the responsibility of the customer to ensure that all other mechanical components of their vehicle are in good condition before opting into a tune. We accept no liability for damage to components other than the ECU arising from the application of a tune.

If you are unsure whether your car is suitable, we recommend having it inspected by a qualified mechanic before ticking the tune option on the order form.

What causes Trionic 8 ECU failure?

Saab mounted the Trionic 8 ECU close to the engine, exposing it to significant heat. Over years of use, the repeated heating and cooling causes thermal cycling stress that eventually cracks the solder joints beneath the main processor.

As those joints crack, the electrical connections under the processor become intermittent. The ECU starts behaving unpredictably — symptoms can come and go with engine temperature, and the car may run fine one day and refuse to start the next.

This is a well-known design flaw in the T8 platform and is by far the most common reason these ECUs fail.

Symptoms that come and go
Worse when engine is warm
Random stalling or no-start
Limp / reduced-power mode
Unpredictable fault codes
Rough or unstable idle

What we do

We fix the thermal damage problem directly — the same way board-level repair specialists fix GPUs and laptop motherboards with the same failure mode.

Reball & reflow the processor

We remove the main processor, strip the old solder balls, and apply fresh ones using quality solder. The chip is then precisely reflowed back onto the board, restoring all electrical connections beneath it.

Repair traces & solder joints

We inspect the board under magnification and repair any additional damaged traces or solder joints caused by years of thermal stress, then test the ECU before returning it.

What we do not fix

In rare cases the underlying silicon of a chip itself may be damaged. This is uncommon, but if it occurs it is beyond repair. We will let you know if that is the case — only an $80 assessment fee plus return postage applies.
